Teacher Information: Naming Fractions

We want our students to be able to write fractions that represent a model and to relate size of fractions to a pictorial representation. They should be able to:

  • Identify how many parts of the whole unit are highlighted and enter that number as the numerator in the fraction.
  • Identify how many parts make up the whole unit and enter that number as the denominator in the fraction.
  • Check whether the fractional representation corresponds to the picture representation by clicking the Check button. To help with relating the size of a fraction to a picture representation, consider asking pupils to estimate the fraction before they count the various parts.
  • Consider how fractions also represent situations like "Five students in a class of 25 students are wearing red shirts."
