Teacher Information: Naming Fractions
We want our students to be able to write fractions that represent a model and to
relate size of fractions to a pictorial representation.
They should be able to:
Identify how many parts of the whole unit are highlighted and enter that
number as the numerator in the fraction.
Identify how many parts make up the whole unit and enter that number as
the denominator in the fraction.
Check whether the fractional representation corresponds to the picture representation
by clicking the Check button.
To help with relating the size of a fraction to a picture representation, consider
asking pupils to estimate the fraction before they count the various parts.
Consider how fractions also represent situations like "Five students in a class
of 25 students are wearing red shirts."
